During his residency at the Verbier 3-D Foundation, artist Gregory Coates developed Fences, a powerful installation that explores themes of division, separation, and identity. The work uses the metaphor of fences—both literal and symbolic—to examine how societal, racial, and cultural boundaries are constructed and reinforced. Set in the striking Alpine landscape of Verbier, Coates' installation invites reflection on the way physical barriers, like fences, shape our understanding of community and belonging.

The use of materials and structures in Fences challenges viewers to reconsider how divisions are formed in both natural and social environments. Coates' work prompts a dialogue about the ways in which we create boundaries, often without acknowledging the impact they have on relationships and shared spaces. Through this poignant exploration, Coates encourages reflection on breaking down these barriers to foster unity, understanding, and a more connected world.

“My inspiration for ‘Fences’ came after my third visit to the mountain. I considered the landscape with its many grasses and plant life and took into account how it would change during the winter season. I created a sculptural work, which would accentuate the changes of the mountain as a work in progress.”
